downwind
i. In the direction away from the source of wind.
ii. Refers to the down-wind leg of a circuit or traffic pattern. The path flown by aircraft parallel to but in the direction opposite to that for takeoff or landing on the airfield circuit pattern.
iii. When transmitted by aircraft or air traffic control on the radio, it means that the aircraft in the circuit pattern is approximately abeam of the upwind end of the runway in use. See down-wind (ii).
